What is an evacuation scheme?
An evacuation scheme includes all measures to ensure the safe and timely exit of a building during emergencies. It involves developing an evacuation plan, providing comprehensive training, supplying safety equipment, and maintaining documentation. Businesses categorise these schemes based on the number of workers and/or hazards at the worksite.
The evacuation scheme requires approval from FENZ, with a decision expected within 20 working days. Since all our instructors and courses are FENZ-approved, we will manage these steps on your behalf.
Does my business need an approved evacuation scheme?
Most businesses need an approved scheme such as a fire evacuation scheme.
Any business that falls under one of these categories is required to have a plan approved:
Buildings where 10 or more people work ✓
Any building in the industries of medical, early childhood, or disabled care services ✓
Prisons ✓
Buildings where 6 or more people sleep ✓
Any building where 100 or more people can gather ✓
When certain levels of hazardous materials are stored in the building ✓

What does the evacuation scheme include?
A comprehensive evacuation scheme will outline escape routes tailored to your building’s layout and be posted at specific points throughout the building. We conduct trial evacuations with occupants present, accompanied by training sessions on fire extinguisher and fire blanket usage, if available. Furthermore, we assess the condition of safety devices, including verifying extinguisher expiration dates.
Your responsibilities as a business owner
As the building owner, you must ensure your plan complies with regulations and stays current. All employees should know the exit procedures and emergency tool locations. Our training, conducted by emergency service experts, can accommodate groups of any size. Updating your plan not only fulfils legal requirements but also ensures occupants are prepared for emergencies.
